| Beschreibung | As part of the international conference „Göttinger Freilandtage“ all interested persons are kindly invited to the opening lecture on Tuesday, December 12, at 6:30 pm at the lecture hall of the German Primate Center, Leibniz Institute for Primate Research (DPZ). Prof. Dustin Rubenstein, behavioral and evolutionary ecologist from Columbia University, will speak about „The evolution and structure of complex animal societies“. The talk will be in English. Many species of animals in a diversity of taxonomic groups are said to form complex societies. But what is a complex society and how does one evolve? Using examples from several species (birds, insects, and crustaceans), he will outline a framework for how we should think about characterizing different types of animal societies based on their reproductive structures. He will then examine the similarities and differences in the structures of societies in disparate animal lineages, and discuss the selective forces that shape group‐living in these species.
