Over the past ten years, the significance of rankings for the German higher education system has risen considerably. A large number of ranking systems, both national and international, have emerged, comparing the performance of universities in respect to different focuses and employing varying methodologies. Despite general methodological concerns about their validity, the rankings document the status of the University of Göttingen as an institution of international renown.

In the national comparison, the Funding Ranking issued by the German Research Foundation (DFG) provides information on the extent to which institutions within Germany receive financial support for research from the leading funding agencies. The University ranks 6th in the 2015 DFG Funding Atlas.
