Mental Health Support

Mental Health Support at Göttingen University/ Göttingen

There are a range of options available when you need mental health support:

  • The Association of Medical Doctors in Lower Saxony has a very useful Website where you can search for specialists in your preferred language. Not so useful is the fact that the website is in German only, but if you enter “Göttingen” under the category “Wo” and select “English” from the drop-down menu under “Fremdsprache”, you get all English-language doctors in Göttingen. You can refine your search by choosing the specialization under “Fachgebiet”. If you need mental health support, chose “Psychologische Psychotherapie”.In all health-related cases your primary contact should be your General Practitioner (GP)/family doctor (Hausarzt), so please get in contact with a GP early on in your stay. You can find one on the same website when you choose “Hausärzt*in” in the specialization drop-down menu.

  • The psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic, which is very close to CeMIS. You can speak to them without prior appointment during their open consultation hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 11:00 to 12:00 am and Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. They will briefly assess the things that concern you and recommend the best following steps / provide treatment for you, if necessary. Please check the counseling hours on their website, as they might change.

  • The psychotherapeutic counseling by the Studentenwerk; They offer open telephone consultation hours in which you can contact them with your concerns and make an appointment. Please check their website for the next open counseling hour.

  • The Women’s Help Line at 0551 – 44684. Find more info here / (choose the English language section)

  • The counseling service for transgender people in Göttingen. You can find them at the Queer Centre (Queeres Zentrum Hospitalstraße 20, 37073 Göttingen). They offer counselling and support for trans and/or non-binary people, their friends and families. You can contact them via email and make an appointment, or you can come to their open consultation hours (without appointment).
