Online Workshops with E-Learning Session via Zoom and Mural, camera and microphone are required.

Objectivs: The primary goal of this course is to equip doctoral researchers with the essential project management skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of academic research. Participants will learn to maintain the integrity and objectivity of their research while managing the pressures of societal impact and diverse funding sources. The course aims to enhance productivity and ensure that research projects are completed within the constraints of time and budget without compromising quality.

Course content: The course content is designed to address the unique challenges faced by doctoral researchers, particularly those conducting hypothesis-driven or exploratory basic research. Unlike industry-focused, product-oriented research, academic research often lacks clearly defined goals and can be subject to unexpected shifts in direction. In this course the participants will:

  • Understand the principles of project management as applied to academic research.
  • Learn to plan project activities effectively.
  • Master the art of communicating schedules and deadlines.
  • Develop skills in reporting project status and progress.
  • Discover other agile and time management skills.

Methods: Seven live online sessions with an expert in a group of other participants

  • (Short) impulse lectures and inputs
  • Group discussions an exercises
  • Breakout sessions and the opportunity for interaction among participants

Asynchronous e-learning sessions

  • Access to e-Learning sessions on project management on the TwentyOne Skills plattform
  • Self-study and reflection

To earn a certificate, the following requirements must be met:

  • Full attendance in all seven live online sessions.
  • Completion of all seven asynchronous e-learning sessions.
  • Fulfillment of tasks from each asynchronous e-learning session. Tasks may include among others creating a project plan or setting goals and timelines.
  • Submission of tasks should be done via Mural, an online whiteboard platform. Participants will document their results by uploading screenshots to Mural, where they will have designated spaces to work on their tasks using whiteboard tools.
  • Results are to be briefly presented during the live sessions, allowing for peer review and instructor feedback.

Trainer: Dr. Sashima Läbe, an experienced coach and geoscientist, brings a wealth of experience to her role as a trainer at Twenty One Skills GmbH. As a Ph.D. and postdoctoral researcher, she understands the intricacies of academic project planning and is passionate about equipping Ph.D. students with practical, effective management strategies.

Admission requirements: Students of GFA, other PhD students if free places are available

Cancellation policy:

Your registration for courses and workshops offered by the GFA is binding. If you want to cancel your registration later than three weeks prior to the workshop start date, you have to provide a physician's note. A late deregistration without a reason for illness is only possible with the consent of the first supervisor. If non of these two conditions is met, you will be barred from registering for GFA courses for the period of one year.
Please be aware that with a late deregistration you block seats for other PhD students, which otherwise could have taken part in the workshop.

Absence policy

To earn credits for a workshop/course, you must not miss more than 10% of total contact hours. In most cases, this will be less than a day. If it is inevitable that you miss more than a whole day, please notify us well in advance (at least one week).
